Match of 2016 - Liverpool 4-3 Dortmund

Lovren’s Last-Gasp Winner Stuns Dortmund

Liverpool clinched a semi-final spot in the Europa League with a dramatic 4-3 win (Agg 5-4) over Borrusia Dortmund.

Before the match, the 27th anniversary of the Hillsborough disaster; when 96 fans went to a football match and never came home; was commemorated with a minutes silence and a mosaic displayed amongst the Kop.

The game started in the worst possible manner for Jurgen Klopp’s side as Dortmund raced to a 2-0 lead after just 9 minutes with goals from Armenian, Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Gabon’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. Dortmund’s quick counter-attacks proved too much for Liverpool with Dortmund wasting several chances to increase their lead in the tie. Due to Dortmund’s stubborn and resilient defence the reds went into half time 2-0 down on the night and 3-1 down in the tie.

In comparison to the first, Liverpool came out like a house on fire in the second half, showing direct purpose in their play. They got their reward two minutes after the break, when Belgium Striker Divock Origi scored his fourth goal in three games by poking the ball past veteran keeper Weidenfeller thus bringing Liverpool back into the game but still needing two more goals to progress. The goal lifted Anfield, giving belief to the fans that they could come back from an improbable position – this hope was soon grabbed away from the energized fans as German Marco Reus found the bottom corner of the net after 57 minutes – killing the crowd once again.

In response, Klopp made two changes, bringing Firmino and Lallana off for Daniel Sturridge and Joe Allen. Allen’s dynamic play started to control the midfield making some key passes and with Sturridge’s movement, Dortmund’s defence had another goal threat to think about.
25 minutes were left when the magician, Phillipe Coutinho, revived the hope in supporters as he struck a low, powerful whipped shot into the bottom corner. He turned away throwing his arms passionately in the air, lifting the Anfield faithful.
Liverpool 2-3 Dortmund.

Suddenly, Dortmund’s defence seemed to panic – rushing clearances, misplaced passes – Coutinho’s goal looked to have disrupted them. Multiple corners were whipped into the box by Liverpool, but they failed to clear the first man causing the Kop to vent their frustration towards experienced head James Milner. This continued until a cross ironically fell to the first man but Daniel Sturridge’s attempted flick confused the defence allowing the ball to fall to the cult figure Mamadou Sakho who nodded home to level the tie at 4-4. An Anfield roar bellowed out of the Kop, showcasing their belief that with thirteen minutes to go, this Liverpool side could seize a late winner.
Liverpool 3-3 Dortmund.

Chants of Liverpool rang around Anfield in the hope that it would drive their team to the winner. As the minutes ticked on by, anxiousness grew heavily within the crowd, they knew their team were one goal away from reaching a semi-final in Europe. 4 added minutes. Liverpool had a free kick just past the half way line. Milner slipped the ball down the line to Daniel Sturridge, his loose touch prompted groans amongst the crowd. However his quick turn and pass set through an advancing James Milner, who stood the ball up to the back post and in came Lovren with a bullet header into the top corner.

Liverpool had done it. One of the greatest comebacks Anfield has seen which prompted electric, magical scenes inside the stadium.

The comeback signifies how far Liverpool have come under Klopp so quickly and how he is changing the fans from ‘Doubters to Believers.’

Evaluation of England

The final friendly in front of the England fans ended with a win, but not a convincing one. Despite Portugal’s Bruno Alves being sent off after just 35 minutes, for a horrific high tackle on Harry Kane, the young, energetic England team failed to capitalise until the final 5 minutes of the match. Substitute Raheem Sterling provided the only spark in the match with a fantastic cross that was met by a glancing header from centre-back Chris Smalling who also gained a clean sheet in front of his new manager Jose Mourinho.

Although England won the match, the performance itself was so uninspired that, to be honest, it did not excite me nor the many fans watching at home. Almost every player, except Sterling, lacked creativity and did not show enough desire to unlock the door of a pretty poor Portugal defence. In my opinion, not one of the England players had a rating above 6, the constant loss of possession and wasted long balls will need to be eradicated if we want to do well at the Euros.

The System: 4-3-3? 4-1-2-1-2?
Another talking point about the England game was the system that Roy picked for the Portugal match which will not be far off the opening game against Russia.
The team:
Hart
Walker/ Smalling/ Cahill/ Rose
Dier/ Milner/ Alli
Rooney
Kane/ Vardy

The formation when attacking was a 4-4-2 diamond or a 4-1-2-1-2 with Captain Wayne Rooney playing in behind the two front men Kane and Vardy. However when defending, Vardy and Kane split wide to create a 4-3-3 with Rooney in the centre blocking potential forward passes from the Portugal defence. Although England kept a clean sheet the defensive aspect of the system hindered the attacking ability of Kane and Vardy. This is because when England won the ball back from Portugal there were no attacking runs being made due to Kane and Vardy almost playing on the right back and left back! With Vardy’s pace and power and Kane’s super ability to score a goal our attack was wasted and led to both of them being taken off towards the end of the match. Also when defending, Wayne Rooney almost looked lost when the Portugal defenders had the ball, he did not know whether to cover the forward passes or close down the defenders which led to Portugal’s centre midfielder Danilo having a lot of the ball. This then affected Kane and Vardy whom both had to track back to cover the diagonal balls that Danilo was playing thus again hindering their ability to mount any kind of counter-attack.

My Euro Team:
I think that the England team should look like this for the opening game vs Russia.
Hart
Clyne, Smalling, Cahill, Rose
Dier, Alli, Wilshere or Milner
Rooney
Kane, Vardy.
Firstly we can all agree that Joe Hart is the best England Keeper that we have and deserves to be in the starting line-up. My first change from the Portugal game is Nathanial Clyne into the team for Kyle Walker. This is the change I would make because of the defensive aspect of the game, I feel that Walker is not lazy but does not put as much effort into going back rather than going forward. Even though Portugal did not put up a great threat, at times Kyle was jogging into position rather than sprinting like he does going forward. Clyne is not as quick as Walker and perhaps not better at attacking but his awareness and positioning is considerably better than Kyle Walker’s which will in the end win England games.
My second and final change of the team from the Portugal game is the including of Jack Wilshere in my Starting XI. I would like to comment that Wilshere should only be picked if he is fit and can last a full 90 minutes. I think that Wilshere has undeniable talent that would help propel England forward during the Euros. Wilshere has his own ability to unlock a defence’s door with the likes of Kane, Vardy and Alli around him he certainly, in my opinion, provides others with a lot of chances. However if he is not fit to play then I would go for James Milner, although some fans may not like him, Milner has all-round attributes that he can bring to the team whether it be crossing or through balls. Regarding the rest of the team, no one can be replaced in the Starting XI that is for sure and with options like Sterling, Sturridge and Lallana from the bench, we do have enough fire power to surpass the measly two goals that we scored at the World Cup 2014.
Our Chances at the Euros:
All that has just been said about the possible team for the opening game against Russia, should not put off our hopes of at least surpassing the quarter final stages of the tournament. There is also an extra round in Euro 2016, the round of 16 stage, but that should not stop our chances of reaching the semi final.
Our route to the final is a little complicated due to the fact that there is an extra place in the next round for the best 3rd place teams but, should results go to plan, I feel England will win their group with 3 wins from 3 games. They would then perhaps face either Croatia or Ukraine. Both these sides, despite individuals who could cause danger, are not better than England so they should be on route to the quarter-finals.
Should expected results continue throughout the tournament, England will face a tough challenge in the quarter final against either Italy or Portugal. These two sides are on par with England’s ability and the game could go either way. If England reaches this stage of the tournament, with our ability up front, we should be able to either break down the Roman wall of Italy or the Lisbon wall of Portugal.
The real test will be in the semi final, where England will come up against, most likely, Spain. This will be the end of the road for England in my opinion as I think Spain’s technical ability will be too much for England. The three lions could cause an upset and beat Spain but I feel for that to happen Spain will have to have a bad day at the office and perhaps the controversial figure of Diego Costa to have the mindset of fighting rather than the concentrating on the match itself.
My Predictions for England’s route to the final:
Group stage:
England 1-0 Russia
England 2-1 Wales
England 3-1 Slovakia
Last 16:
England 2-0 Ukraine
or
England 2-1 Croatia
Quarter finals:
England 2-1 Portugal
or
England 1-0 Italy
Semi-Final:
England 0-2 Spain
Assessment of Roy Hodgson:
If England were to get to the semi-final of this European Championships would this mean that Hodgson should get a new contract? I think not. I am not saying that Roy has done a bad job but not a good job either. He has introduced new young players and given them a chance for example, Marcus Rashford and has qualified for every tournament so far which, to be honest, was not hard to do. His first tournament was Euro 2012, a right off they said, first tournament, not long in the job. England finished with a defeat in the quarter finals on penalties, of course, to Italy. Many people praised him for his work but he will really be judged on the next World Cup and Euros. World Cup 2014 came along and despite a tough group, fans were optimistic on the chances of England to at least get out of the group. Did they? No. Finished bottom of the group, 1 point, 2 goals. At the end of the tournament you’d have to say, have we improved? Most certainly not. Not yet perhaps?
Nonetheless we must now forget our past tournaments and focus on this one, and I believe that England have the ability to reach the semi-final, anything less and I feel Hodgson’s time as England manager will be up.

Jordan Henderson – A leader? A Captain?

“Liverpool FC’s new captain is... Jordan Henderson!” When this news broke in summer 2015, many Liverpool fans were happy and delighted, including myself, as a relatively young talented man stepped forward to replace the iconic Steven Gerrard as captain of Liverpool FC. Dazzling displays in front of the Anfield faithful captured the hearts of many Liverpool fans.  Fast forward a year on and many fans’ opinions have changed dramatically of the Geordie born Centre Midfielder.

“How has this happened?” fans asked “Was it his injury?...The change of management?” all possible reasons or perhaps excuses for Jordan Henderson’s downturn in form and leadership. Many fans have divided opinions, some say he can be a leader, others disagree, but the downfall in the whole team’s performance has certainly not helped the England international’s popularity at Liverpool.  The main issue with Jordan having the armband is when Liverpool are behind in a game, they look to their captain for inspiration and, to be honest, all the major comebacks this season have come without Henderson in the side, such as Arsenal and most significantly Borrusia Dortmund. It is ironic how the man who delivered that cross directly on to the head of Dejan Lovren was... the stand in Captain James Milner. Young players like Coutinho, Can, Origi all look to their captain for the cutting edge and Milner delivered it. Only once this season has Henderson looked that figure, at Norwich, where he scored to make it 2-3 and started the comeback. However,t this season he has hardly finished a match. Is that the quality of a leader? I say no! Others may say, “He is protecting an injury” Gerrard would not have come off, unless he could not walk.

Who should he be replaced by? If Jordan were to step down as captain there are a few candidates that fit the boat, as they say, they include;
·         James Milner – experienced, title winning warrior who tries his best every game to win.
·         Lucas Leiva – Longest serving player at the club but will he be with us any longer? We do not know, he loves the club and the city with a warm heart.
·         Emre Can – Looks like a leader, maybe for the future but has the willingness to drive on and carry the team with him.

In my honest opinion, of the three candidates here, James Milner looks like the best for Liverpool for now, with Emre Can following in the footsteps of the title winning midfielder. James has the quality to provide the game winning cross or through ball, all be it, not as much as Gerrard, but not far off. His willingness and energy to win the ball back, 7/10 every week, added with the experience of winning trophies he looks like the man to lead the Liverpool team next season.

Klopp's men stumble but manage to beat Sunderland at the Stadium of Light

Liverpool beat Sunderland 0-1 on Wednesday to give themselves 2 wins going into 2016, despite some nervy moments late on.

The first half was mainly dominated by Liverpool, as Firmino hit the post with a right-footed strike from the edge of the area. Also Clyne did force the black cats' goalkeeper Vito Mannone into a save with a long range effort.
Jermain Defoe troubled the Reds in the first half with a long range effort that was well saved by Simon Mignolet. Despite efforts from both sides neither side could find the breakthrough in the first half.
Christian Benteke however, did make the breakthrough after only 30 seconds of the second half kicking off after a through ball from Adam Lallana. It wasn't all smiles for Benteke because, like against Leicester he missed a great one on one chance in the last few moments of the match.

Overall it was a tough hard-fought win for the Reds which moves them level on points with Man United which is a real plus point for Liverpool's season.

My player ratings:
Mignolet: 8/10
Clyne 8/10
Lovren 8/10
Sakho 7/10
Moreno 6/10
Henderson 7/10
Can 9/10 MOTM
Firmino 8/10
Lallana 7/10
Coutinho 6/10
Benteke 8/10

Liverpool's five match winning run is stopped by a resurrected Newcastle side

Klopp's men were beaten 2-0 at St James Park with Skrtel scoring an own goal in the 69th minute and Wijnaldum scored in the last 5 minutes of the match to seal the win.

I thought that the Reds were poor today and certainly missed Emre Can in midfield, his size and presence would have been a great help as the midfield of Newcastle dominated Liverpool's throughout the match.

The Reds didn't show enough fight and urgency to get a goal and put pressure on the Newcastle defence. Skrtel's own goal was unfortunate but Wijnaldum shouldn't have been able to have enough space in the box to pull off a shot on goal. Newcastle's second goal was a counter attack at the end of the game that was scored by Wijnaldum to end Klopp's hope of gaining a point out of the match. Liverpool did have a goal wrongly ruled out for offside but I thought the Reds didn't deserve a goal and didn't deserve to gain a point out of the game.

A disappointing performance couldn't have come at a worse time with Spurs and the two Manchester clubs dropping points. Klopp's side could have moved within 3 points of the top 4.

My Player Ratings:
Mignolet 5/10
Clyne 5/10
Skrtel 4/10
Lovren 5/10
Moreno 5/10

Klopp's men run riot at St Mary's

Liverpool produce a stunning 6-1 win at Southampton to progress to the semi finals of the Capital One Cup where they will face Stoke City.

I thought that the Reds made a statement tonight to the rest of the teams in the premier league with this win at Southampton even with a weaker side. We came from 1-0 down inside the first minute and battled back to emphatically win. Liverpool had a weaker side which shows their strength in depth and the quality they can produce when the team needs to be rotated.
Daniel Sturridge's return to the starting line up was a real positive and also scoring 2 goals which sent a smile to every Liverpool fan. Divock Origi in my opinion was man of the match, scoring 3 goals and producing a fine display all around to help Klopp's men to a win.
The Reds are now shaping up to be a quality side under Klopp and I feel that he can lead Liverpool to many trophies. If Klopp can get his side to produce these performance at home, Liverpool can most certainly get the champions league places.

My Player Ratings:
Bogdan 7/10
Randall 7/10
Skrtel 8/10
Lovren 8/10
Moreno 8/10
Lucas 8/10
Allen 8/10
Can 8/10

Brazilian magic sparkles in Manchester

Liverpool beat Manchester City 4-1 at the  Eithiad Stadium on Saturday which gave the Reds a massive 3 points.
Klopp trusted the same team (barring Sakho) that beat Chelsea earlier in the month with Roberto Firmino playing as the lone front man for Liverpool.
It worked a treat as the Reds raced into a 3-0 lead just after 30 minutes. Liverpool outplayed Man City, producing fantastic football that the City defenders couldn't cope with. Overall Klopp's back four was solid thoroughout apart from a mistake from Skrtel which handed the ball to Sergio Aguero who put city back in the game at 1-3. Skrtel made up for his mistake by smashing in the forth and rounding off a superb win for the Reds.
Dejan Lovren was a real plus point for Liverpool as he looked like a real leader at the back and defended brilliantly from start to finish.
My man of the match goes to Roberto Firmino, his creativity and link up with Coutinho was sublime; he scored and set up a goal for his fellow Brazilian.

My Player Ratings:
Mignolet 8/10
Clyne 7/10
Skrtel 8/10
Lovren 9/10
Moreno 7/10
Lucas 8/10
Milner 8/10
